BrainTrust - 2011 Humanitarian Award Winner
The BCAB 2011-12 Humanitarian Award has been presented to BrainTrust Canada. "We are overjoyed and humbled," said Magda Kapp, Director of Communications for BrainTrust Canada. "This award will allow us to increase awareness for the cause of brain injury exponentially." Kapp says brain injury is the leading cause of death and disability of people under the age of 44.
BCAB President Ken Kilcullen says his organization is proud to lend its support to BrainTrust. "It's our hope that awareness generated through our member stations will reduce the incidences of preventable brain injuries and stem the tide of this silent epidemic."
The public service ads will run free of charge for one year beginning July 1, 2011 and will focus on brain injury prevention. Listeners and viewers will be directed to protectyourhead.com for brain injury simulations, facts and prevention tips.
The Leading Voice for Brain Injury
Each year 22,000 British Columbians suffer a brain injury - with the highest numbers occurring in the 16-24 year old age group. Currently there are 120,000 British Columbians living with the long term disabling effects of brain injury. The sad fact is that many of those injuries could have been prevented.
Based in Kelowna, BC, BrainTrust Canada has been providing community-based rehabilitation and support for people with brain injury for 24 years. Their focus is on both improving the quality of life for persons with brain injury, while reducing the incidence of injury through promoting prevention.
The Humanitarian Award
Established in 1980, the BCAB Humanitarian Award provides charitable organizations with a distribution network to communicate their message across the province. BCAB members recognize their ongoing responsibility to give back to the communities they serve. The Humanitarian Award is another avenue where the association as a whole does just that.
