Ken's Korner - New President Looks Ahead
I am very proud to have been given the opportunity to lead a great team of board members through an association that has such a strong history representing the interests of BC Broadcasters.
Before we look ahead, I want to thank Brad Phillips for his dedication to our board for the last eight years and as President these past two. We have built a strong group that continues to step up and work on your behalf.
Focus on Seven Areas of Service
Through the member survey conducted in 2009, the Board of Directors identified seven areas of service that remain important to BCAB members. They include: Advocacy, Legal Services, Education, Professional Development, Community Service, Industry Recognition and the Annual Conference. A great deal of work has been done to this point to improve in each area of service and we will continue to make progress.
Copyright Legislation
We will work on behalf of our members to continue the efforts in representing the broadcasters’ interests at all levels of government. With a Conservative majority in Ottawa we may see positive movement on Bill C-32 in the coming months and the BCAB will stay focused on this important copyright legislation. The board will take the opportunity with new leadership in the BC government to meet with Premier Christy Clark and her cabinet in the upcoming year, bringing forward the vital role BC broadcasters play in the lives of British Columbians.
65th Annual BCAB Conference in Vancouver 2012
A great deal of the board’s efforts and focus will be toward the 65th Annual Conference May 8-11, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver. For the first time in many years, the conference will return to the city. Because of the success of our recent conferences and the lack of a national convention, we hope to provide greater value, not only to BC broadcasters, but also to those from across Canada. We will be counting on help from not only the board, but the membership as a whole to put on what we hope is the best conference in our history and something that brings great value to Canada’s broadcasters. If you would like to join our team to help, please contact me.
Regular Communications
I am especially happy with the progress we have made in our efforts to communicate with our membership through our digital newsletter and regular updates through this website. It is important that we continue to communicate to you the efforts we are making at the board level.
And with that, if there is a way we can do a better job, please let us know.
I look forward to working with the BCAB Board of Directors on your behalf for the next two years. I’m available anytime for your comments and input.
